To rake or mulch the leaves

🍂 Rake or Mulch Your Fall Leaves? Which Is Better for Your Lawn?

As fall approaches in Lubbock, leaves and acorns can quickly begin accumulating across lawns, flower beds, sidewalks, and curbs. One common question homeowners have is: Should I rake and remove the leaves, or mulch them back into the lawn?

The answer depends largely on how many leaves you have and the condition of your lawn. In many cases, both methods have a place in good fall lawn care.

Mulching Leaves

When the layer of leaves is relatively light, mulching can be an excellent option. A mower chops the leaves into small pieces that settle between the grass blades and gradually decompose.

Those small pieces return organic matter to the soil and eliminate the need to bag and haul away every leaf.

Mulching can also save considerable time compared with traditional raking.

For the best results, leaves should generally be dry and chopped finely enough that they don't cover or smother the grass.

Raking & Leaf Removal

When leaves become too thick to mulch effectively, removal becomes the better option.

A heavy layer of leaves can block sunlight and reduce air movement around the grass. Leaves that remain wet and matted for extended periods can also create unfavorable conditions for the lawn underneath.

Raking or blowing the leaves allows the turf to remain exposed and keeps the property looking clean and maintained.

So Which Should You Choose?

A good rule is simple: mulch lighter amounts and remove heavy accumulations.

You don't necessarily have to choose one method for the entire season. Early leaf fall may be easily handled with a mulching mower, while heavier accumulations later in the season may require blowing, raking, collection, and removal.

The goal isn't simply to remove every leaf—it's to keep leaves from becoming so thick that they interfere with the health and appearance of your lawn.

🍁 Don't Forget the Acorns
Leaves aren't the only thing accumulating during fall.
Large amounts of acorns, small branches, and other tree debris can collect throughout the lawn, flower beds, sidewalks, driveways, and curb areas. Periodic cleanup can prevent all of this material from turning into a much larger job later in the season.
