The Things You See Working in Lawn Care That Can Be Disturbing

Working in lawn care gives you a perspective on residential properties that most people never see. You spend hours outside, walk into backyards, work along fences and alleys, clean neglected areas, and sometimes uncover things that have been hidden by tall grass or weeds for months.

Most days, it's simply part of the job. But occasionally, you encounter things that are genuinely unpleasant—or even disturbing.

Animal Waste

One of the most common problems is excessive dog waste.

A few droppings are one thing. A backyard that hasn't been cleaned for weeks or months is something entirely different. Besides the smell and sanitation concerns, dog waste can get on mower tires, decks, shoes, string trimmers, and other equipment.

For a lawn-care professional, this isn't simply an inconvenience. It creates an unsanitary working environment.

That's why having pet waste cleaned before lawn service is greatly appreciated.

Trash Hidden in Tall Grass

Overgrown properties can hide almost anything.

I've encountered bottles, cans, plastic, toys, pieces of metal, branches, construction debris, and other objects buried beneath vegetation.

These items can become dangerous when struck by a mower or string trimmer. Something that appears to be an ordinary patch of tall grass may actually contain objects capable of damaging equipment or becoming projectiles.

That's one reason I inspect heavily overgrown areas before mowing.

Dead Animals

Unfortunately, outdoor work occasionally means encountering dead birds, rodents, rabbits, or other animals.

Sometimes you don't see them until you're already working nearby.

It's certainly not one of the enjoyable parts of lawn care, but it is part of working outdoors around homes, alleys, fields, and natural areas.

Insects, Spiders & Other Critters

When you're trimming around fences, moving debris, cleaning flower beds, or reaching underneath shrubs, you quickly learn that you're not always working alone.

Spiders, ants, wasps, bees, rodents, snakes, and other wildlife may be hiding exactly where you need to work.

Most simply want to be left alone, but disturbing a nest or hidden animal can quickly turn an ordinary cleanup into a safety concern.

Protective clothing, gloves, boots, and paying attention to your surroundings become extremely important.

Neglected Areas Around a Property

Some of the more difficult things aren't necessarily disgusting—they're simply reminders of how quickly a property can deteriorate.

An elderly homeowner may no longer be physically capable of maintaining a backyard. Someone may have been sick. A family may be overwhelmed with other responsibilities. A rental property may have sat unattended.

You sometimes walk into a property expecting a lawn job and realize the situation is much bigger than tall grass.

That's when it's important not to judge.

The condition of a yard doesn't necessarily tell you the circumstances that created it.

What the Customer Doesn't Always See

There's another side of professional lawn care that often goes unnoticed.

After working around animal waste, weeds, insects, dirt, dust, moldy vegetation, or other unpleasant material, equipment needs attention too.

Mower decks, tires, trimmers, tools, gloves, boots, and other equipment may need to be cleaned before moving on.

Maintaining clean equipment is part of respecting the next customer's property.

It's Part of the Profession

Lawn care isn't always perfectly striped lawns and beautiful before-and-after photographs.

Sometimes it's dirty.

Sometimes it smells.

Sometimes you uncover something you'd rather not have seen.

And sometimes you're standing in waist-high weeds wondering what might be underneath them before taking another step.

But that's also part of what makes a transformation satisfying.

You can arrive at a property that's been neglected, carefully work through the problems, remove the unwanted growth and debris, and eventually stand back and see a property that's clean and manageable again.

At Wester Lawn Care Service, every property is approached with attention to safety, respect for the homeowner, and an understanding that there may be more behind an overgrown yard than what you can see from the street.

Because sometimes the biggest part of cleaning up a property is dealing with what was hiding underneath.
